Laboratory testing: cbc: wbc, rbc, h&h and platelet, wbcs:4,000-11,000. Platelets: clotting factor (150,000 to 400,000 mm3: plts can be from malignancy or polycythemia, plts can be evidence of autoimmune disease, bone marrow suppression, or enlarged spleen. Iron: levels may indicate hemochromatosis, iron excess, liver disorder, or megaloblastic anemia, levels may indicate iron deficiency anemia, or hemorrhage. Total iron- measures the amount of iron in the blood. Females blood levels differs with men due to monthly menstruation periods. Levels may indicate anemia, hemolysis, or hemorrhage. Total iron-binding capacity (tibc)- reflects an indirect measurement of serum transferrin, a protein that binds with iron and transports it for storage: coagulation studies (ptt. Diagnostic testing: bone scan- radioisotope injected 2 hours before the scan & scans performed to evaluate structures of bone. Will need to be educated to lie still for an hour during the scan. Liver/spleen scan- same as bone scan, but looking at liver or spleen.
