A condition where endometrial tissue lies outside the uterine cavity. Scarring bc endometrial lining tissue is outside of uterus and is somewhere else in body. Normal cycle starts and tissue undergoes mini menstrual cycle outside the uterus, causing scarring. Blood from mini menstruation collects in a cyst, which may rupture causing pain. Diagnosis: based on history, physical exam, laparoscopy. Depends on whether or not want future pregnancies: nsaids to decrease inflammation, oral contraceptives to suppress ovulation, progestin q3months, danazol (danacin)- testosterone derivative to suppress ovulation. Many side effects such as weight gain, hirsutism: gnrh: suppress menstruation. Not for long term, only 6 months: lupron- suppress menstruation. Nursing implications: thorough history, provide info about options, support: symptoms, long term. Consequences: increases risk of ovarian cancer, as time goes on, possibility of infertility increases. A complex endocrine disorder involving over production of estrogen by the ovaries and excess testosterone but inadequate progesterone production. Fluid filled cysts develop on ovary and don"t rupture.
