Bleeding- bright red: vs of mom and baby. Doppler fht if 12+ weeks: no vaginal exam if bleeding, call md, npo diet, iv access, type and cross, bedrest, if pitocin, stop. First trimester bleeding: abortion/miscarriage: termination of pregnancy before age of viability (20 weeks), it is classified as an abortion if the fetus weighs < 600 grams or measures < 16. 5 cm. Increased risk- chronic disease, ama, infection, endocrine imbalances: if> 600 grams and > 16. 5 cm, classified as stillborn. Increased risk if frequent hot tub usage: abortion types: Major reason is defect in fetus or the support structure (placenta). Incomplete abortion: part of the products have been expelled, but some have been contained, usually placenta.
