ASTR 001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Gravitational Redshift, Length Contraction, Special Relativity
Document Summary
Light waves take extra time to climb out of a deep hole in space-time leading to a gravitational redshift. In a black hole, time slows down, and light gets stretched out. The laws of physics are the same for all observers. Moving objects appear shorter to observers; this is called length contraction. Time passes more slowly on moving objects than on stationary objects; this is time dilation. The masses of moving objects increase as their speeds approach c. Describes matter accelerating at high rates or in the presence of great masses. Newton was able to discover an equation that seemed to describe the strength of the gra(cid:448)itational for(cid:272)e, (cid:271)ut he didn"t kno(cid:449) (cid:449)hy gra(cid:448)ity (cid:271)eha(cid:448)ed that way simply that it did. Einstein tried to understand why gravity behaved as newton found and did. In so doing, he changed our conception of the structure of the entire universe. Einstein realized that the effects of both are the same.
