Pain video lecture: congenital insensitivity to pain, mutation in gene that causes brain to be unable to tell pain, people with this often die early, pain is a subjective experience o. It is not a stimulus, it is perception: major features of the pain experience, sensory discriminative, affective (emotional, cognitive, there are two major types of clinical pain, nociceptive (tissue injury) pain associated with inflammation, neuropathic (nerve injury) pain. Sunburn is fine when left alone, but when touched it is painful. Cut the nerve fiber and remove pain pathway. Cut out portions of brain: but these methods do not work! In the setting of tissue injury, the small diameter fibers may respond to innocuous. Tissue enjoy causes synthesis of arachidonic acid, which gets attacked by cyclo-oxygenase enzyme (cox enzyme), which produces molecules called prostaglandins, which act on nerve fibers and lowers threshold, leading to allodynia (sensitization)
