Post 9/11/ "war on terror": hollywood political thrillers have a new cultural currency. Analyzing the muslim body in hollywood illustrates raclialized and gendered imaginings of "others" both on and off screen. Certain movies (ie. black hawk down, the kingdom) reinvigorate orientalist discourses and colonial violence thru negative images of muslim bodies in hollywood. The kingdom -- takes place in saudi arabia. Released post 9/11 - fits socio political landscape of heightened anxieties towards islam, muslims, arabs. Heightened surveillance and violence against this community is legitimated in the name of public security. Muslim bodies are depicted as dangerous, pre-modern, uncivilized. On & off screen, disciplined through racialized and gendered discourses. Scholars have attempted to map the interactions of western encounters w "others" These representations tell us about the world we live and give it an order that makes common sense - jiwani. Represents them as money hungry, dangerous men, eroticized women or maidens. These roles limit arabs in to problematic spaces.
