The university claimed to have no ties with the slave trade whatsoever (gutman) Kathleen brown on the penn slavery project: There were almost 100 trustees owned slaves. Many of the slaves in philadelphia were women because the biggest demand was for housework (not fieldwork) When he was fundraising he was definitely targeting the rich plantation owners (in the south). He didn"t care that it was dirty money . It is very likely that enslaved people supported the university, in the name of the individuals they worked for. Like, oh let me get my slave to come help set up the event tonight they won"t mind not that they are penn"s slaves tho . It does seem like the university is behind them on following up.
