Document Summary

Live mostly on the ground (except for orangutans) Bipedalism is the shared characteristic that defines them. Several species were present simultaneously during hominin evolution. Different hominin species lived in physical contact of each other. We have the ability to lock our knees, chimps cannot. Chimp thigh bones go out, ours goes in. Chimps-requires much more energy to walk tall than humans, burns much more calories. Humans-our energy to walk tall is much less than chimps. Gluteal abductors make it easier for humans to stand tall. Humans have the arch in their feet making it more comfortable to walk tall. Humans have a double curve spine-allows for the center of gravity to be where it is and allows for bipedalism. Great apes and chimps only have one curve. Foramen magnum is toward the back for chimps and under our head for humans.
