Document Summary
Perception - understanding of what was said/heard. Need reception of the sound to occur before perception can occur. Auditory system and brain are responsible for reception/perception of sound. Reception - detection of presence of a sound by the auditory system. Requires adequate access to sound i. e. enough hearing to be able to detect the sounds. Cn viii: vestibulocochlear, pathways to the brainstem, auditory cortex. Location of the ear in the skull. Determine where a sound is coming from. Especially if it is coming from behind you. Tube open on 1 end (external auditory meatus) and closed on the other (tympanic membrane) Outer (cid:1151) = cartilaginous, inner (cid:1152) = bony (temporal bone) Lined with epithelium and cilia, contains cerumen (ear wax) High acid content inhibits bacteria growth. Provides boundary between outer and middle ear. Air pressure, which is regulated by the eustachian tube, should = patm. Superior-posterior aspect = oval window; below that is the round window (membrane covered)
