Semantics and pragmatics: children with hl (2-4 yrs old) express the same semantic and pragmatic functions as children with normal hearing in the 1 word stage (<2 yrs) Lexical/semantic skills: vocabulary delays seen in children with hearing loss when compared to peers with normal hearing, degrees of vocabulary delay often associated with degree of hearing loss. Syntactic/morphological skills: restricted knowledge of word classes. Omission of function words: restricted knowledge of syntax. Overuse of subject-verb-object sentence structure: overall syntactic delay with plateau, deviant syntax seen in children with profound loss. Misuse of morphological markers: frequently for past tense of plurality. Phonological errors: similar to those seen in younger children with normal hearing, children with hearing loss develop speech sounds in the same order as children with normal hearing.
