Filming dark scenes
• films may seem like they are shot in the dark
o but film cameras require a great amount of light
▪ so the scees are lighted specially to capture a dark fil
• chiaroscuro
o treatment of light when filming a dark scene
• silhouette
o using the camera to expose the background
o the camera focuses on the background
o the subject is blurred
▪ the background then seems darker than the subject
• edge lighting
o have the person face the camera
▪ have dim lighting behind the person
• have the shadow of the persos face reflect across a wall
• breaking up light
o shatter light
o using a fragmented mirror
▪ creates random shadows
• the shadows reflect on the person
• the scene is dark
• Contrast
o have the background be dark
▪ place dark objects
▪ dark furniture
o have the subject be bright
▪ bright clothes
▪ bright jewelry to reflect light
