Document Summary

Remote village in northwest of huetenango department in guatemala. People of this town rely on milpas (cornfields) Worked in tzalala for 10 years as schoolmaster. Few villagers finish the 6th grade > leave to help parents in migration to costal plantations. Army attacked village at 11:00 am on september 9, 1982. After attack > rang a bell to gather men in center of village. Civil patrol thought army were guerrillas because of their olive green uniforms. Any house without them would get bombed by government. Guerrillas normally pass through village without causing harm > this is how people figured out the army wasn"t guerrillas (because army caused harm) Army abuses their power = can kill anyone just by saying they"re leftist sympathizer. Jokes = torturing people until they confess something even if it is a lie. Take him away and have it make jokes . Everything in the village is done by their hands without help from the government.
