3/17/14 Symbolic and Actual female roles in wartime Symbol • Liberty • Damsel in distress • Mom (reason you’re sent to war) Men leaving for military, defense plants seeking mass employment • Could previously hire children/ immigrants o Legislation prevents children from working o Immigrants bad idea at wartime Actual female roles • Filling in for men’s labor  1940- 28%  1945- 37%  1947- 30%  1950- 34% o Concerns:  Children turn into delinquents -> neglected when moms go to work  Can women do EVERYTHING men can do? (heavy lifting, machine work)  Would they demand more pay/ promotion? Meet Mrs. Casey Jones • Casey the engineer gone to war • Wife works railroad (smiling) o Middle aged (anyone can help) • Appeals to women to help railroad • Ad for war bonds at bottom
