Radio in the 1930s and 1940s was very popular. Referred to as the golden age because it had the largest audience and the greatest influence during that time. Network affiliate- local tv station that carries the content of one network. Radio networks inked the country for a common national cultural experience. They also created the first truly nationwide advertising media and this began the 20th century emergence of big corporations, especially the consumer goods. Mid 1950s radio had begun to lose its audience to tv. Most station turned to rock and roll to serve a young audience. Caused record companies to produce more of the music to meet demand. Eventually rock and roll became popular enough to filter into movies and tvs. Media cycle where the content starts out as elitist, then populist and then specialized. Starts as elite- because only the rich can afford. Becomes populist because its mass produced and cheaper. Broadcast- signal is transmitted through airways (local)
