Start as elitist because of affordability (money), then become populist as they become affordable, then specialized with content geared toward certain demographics. Today"s media is specialized with content that targets a particular group of people based on age, sex, and race. Reagan deregulated in the 1980s, which loosened regulations about ownership. Corporations then got bigger which contributed to political campaigns. When radio first became popular in the early 1900s legislators defined radio as a shared resource for the public. Laws were eventually passed regulating how the public airwaves could be used and in what manner private businesses could take part in the industry. Throughout the 1920s-1940s lawmakers would enact many regulations aimed at regaining control over the industry. Deregulation: began in the 1980"s which allowed for loosening of acceptable content. 1950"s-1970"s only three networks on tv abc, nbc, cbs.
