KIN 123 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Slow-Wave Sleep, Basal Metabolic Rate, Biology Of Depression
Document Summary
*sleep is defined as the state of unconsciousness from which a person can be aroused by sensory or other stimuli* Body starts shutting down after 36-48 hours without sleeping. Obesity (reach for sugary foods for energy) Immune system slows down - get a common cold. Slow wave sleep [non-rapid eye movement] sleep. Deep, restful sleep. (occurs within the 1st hour after falling asleep). Relaxing the body: decrease in blood pressure, respiratory rate and basal metabolic rate (parasympathetic nervous system) Brainwaves are slow and large, decreased brain activity and metabolism. Forms a major part of the sleep cycle. Rapid eye movement (rem) sleep [paradoxical/desynchronized sleep]: Back and forth eye movement, limb movement. This phase is not so restful and is associated with vivid dreaming (nightmares). Each bout of rem sleep lasts 5-30 minutes. Rem sleep become longer the more rested a person is. Person is even more difficult to wake up when in rem phase of sleep cycle.
