Document Summary

Tightening of the chest: wheezing, dyspnea o. Symptoms of asthma result from a combination of inflammation and bronchoconstriction, so treatment must address both components: decrease in elasticity of tissue (we need them to be elastic to exhale) Chronic, progressive, largely irreversible disorder characterized by airflow restrictions and inflammation. Pathophysiology: chronic bronchitis (chronic cough and excessive sputum production) and emphysema (deterioration of alveoli) Most antiasthma drugs are administered via inhalation. Therapeutic effects are enhanced because drug is directly going to site of action. Systemic effects are minimized: relief for acute attacks is rapid. Small, hand held, pressurized devices that deliver measured dose of drug: dosing usually accomplished with 1 or 2 puffs. If 2 puffs needed, wait 1 minute between each o o. Patient should begin to inhale before activating the device (pt. activated) Spacers- device that is attached directly to the mdi to increase delivery of dug to the lungs. Decrease deposition of drug on the oropharyngeal mucosa.
