What is Biology?
Chemistry + Physics + C = Bio
o Or the study of life
Chemistry and physics created when the Universe came into existence.
C= carbon, the most important atom on Earth
o All the life on Earth is here b/c of Carbon
The Big Bang:
The Universe started from a single, infinitely dense point
13.7 billion years ago
All matter created in this universe
Everything expanded outward
o still doing this to this day
Chemistry and Physics:
Chemistry is the study of how molecules and atoms interact
Physics is the study of how matter behaves
o Use physical characteristics to study chemistry
Life is made of matter
Life is dependent upon chemical reactions and follows physical laws
What about Carbon?
Atoms are the building blocks of matter, or elements
o Everything is made up of atoms
Carbon is the most important element, basis of all life
Carbon has special properties and is the 4th most common element in the Universe
o We are carbon based life
o About 90% of molecules in our body are carbon
Atoms:
Single atoms are the smallest unit of any element
o This is why it's important
Atoms can be divided but are then just generic particles
When atoms combine, molecules are formed
Molecules can be very small or very large
Types of bonds:
1. Covalent
o Atoms are bonded to form molecules

Document Summary

The big bang: the universe started from a single, infinitely dense point, 13. 7 billion years ago, all matter created in this universe, everything expanded outward, still doing this to this day. Chemistry and physics: chemistry is the study of how molecules and atoms interact, physics is the study of how matter behaves, use physical characteristics to study chemistry. Life is dependent upon chemical reactions and follows physical laws. Types of bonds: covalent, atoms are bonded to form molecules, very strong or weak - bonds, strongest bond type covalent, generally will not fall apart easily and require energy to break. Like a divorce, can be done, but requires a lot of time and energy: sharing electrons between atoms. Ions are atoms with charge (+ or -) Reactions: atoms and molecules combine, atoms and molecules break apart, these changes happen in reactions, a reaction is simply the creation or destruction of bonds, making and breaking bonds uses energy.
