TMD 226 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Toughened Glass, Bentwood, Particle Board
Document Summary
Three levels of processing these materials: natural. Wood may be sliced into thin sheets. Wood: most available/ more familiar of natural materials, exterior and interior, softwood. Soft to cut with handsaw: hardwood. Pressing wood chips/sawdust together to make a board: lamination. When steam heat can be flexible and rebent: molded plywood. Masonry: general term for a family of materials that played a major role in historic building, continues to modern use, construction with stone; brick, tile, concrete, gypsum block, pyramids of egypt, strength and stability, columns, stone. Made of cement, sand and stones, mixed with water. Doorframes, doors, window, handrails: skyscrapeer, aluminum. Glass: transparency, opaque, mirror, movement in interior without vision. Resists tendency to shatter, put inbetween glasses. Treated by heat to gain extra strength. Cannot be cut and must be factory produced in desired sizes and shapes. Made embedded mesh of wire that holds together even when breakage. Code requirement in locations where fire barrier is needed.
