AHIS 120gp Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Carolingian Art, Physic Garden, Eucharist
Document Summary
Very similar to san vitale in ravenna. 2 stories - a ground floor and a gallery above. Imitating the eastern emperor in choosing this type of centralized structure. Seems like there is a third story, but really on two stories. The third story is framed by columns that were used to support the building which makes it look like a third story. At san vitale, the walls are curved in order to minimize the largeness of the piers. They don"t care that you can see the pillars that support the structure - more simplified than the byzantine structure. Indication of the second coming and a reference to the eucharist and to the lamb of god who would take away the sins of the world - salvation of god. Made of calf skins that have been sewn together. Sons were sent to monasteries so that the first son would inherit all of a family"s estate instead of having it be divided.
