BISC 104Lxg Lecture 16: Notes - Blood Disorders & Cardiovascular System
Document Summary
The bloods ability to carry oxygen is reduced. Can result from too little hemoglobin, too few red blood cells, or both. Symptoms include fatigue, headaches, dizziness, paleness, breathlessness, and heart palpitations. Pernicious anemia: occurs when there is insufficient production of red blood cells. A cancer of the white blood cells that causes the number of white blood cells to greatly increase. Viral disease of the lymphocytes caused by the einstein-barr virus. Symptoms include fever, headache, sore throat, and swollen lymph nodes. There is no treatment, so mono must simply run its course. Caused by faulty gene involved in the production of clotting factors. Treatment involves restoration of the missing clotting factor. Arteries are thick, muscular vessels that carry blood away from the heart to body tissues. Smooth muscle of the middle layer contracts and the diameter of the lumen narrows, reducing blood flow. Smooth muscle of the middle layer relaxes and the diameter of the lumen increases, increasing blood flow.
