BISC 104Lxg Lecture 18: Notes - Cardiovascular Disease
Document Summary
Cardiovascular disease is the single biggest killer of men and women in the united. Affects slightly more men than women, until menopause. However, women who have heart attacks are twice as likely as men to die in the subsequent weeks. Blood clots: the rough surface of a fatty deposit in an artery can damage platelets and trigger clot formation. Along the wall of a blood vessel or within the heart where it may obstruct blood flow; in the deep veins of the legs or pelvis when blood flow is sluggish. Embolism: blockage of a blood vessel (often a thrombus that breaks free) floats through the circulatory system and lodges in a small vessel, where it can block blood flow and cause tissue death beyond that point. Clot dissolving drugs: tissue plasminogen activator (t-pa) to treat stroke. Can cause fatal problems such as: heart works harder and enlarges, kidneys, brain, blood vessels.
