Document Summary

Lecture 30: canopy of the tropical rainforest is the top layer, permafrost is the permanently frozen layer under the ground in the tundra. Savannas are grasslands with scattered trees, distinct seasons: wet and dry, fire is an abiotic factor. Deserts have low rainfall and are usually hot: nocturnal animals to avoid heat. Chaparrals have mildly wet winters and dry, hot summers: fires, southern california. Temperate grasslands exhibit seasonal drought: grazing and agriculture. Temperate deciduous forests: dense trees, cold winters and hot summers, humans have logged many of these forests. Coniferous forests are the largest terrestrial regions: long cold winters and short wet summers, logged at a very high rate. Tundra have low growing plants: the climate is windy and cold, has a short growing season, permafrost is only one meter down, arctic and alpine are the two types, oil and mineral development are threatening this biome.
