Lecture: pop art and architecture, camp (sontag), kitsch, and changes in taste, postmodernism and cinema. When we talk about pop art, we dip back into 60"s postmodernism . After-modernism (how is it also a continuation of experimental traditions) Modernism: cultural divisions (high and low) modernism rejected mainstream and preferred avant-garde, valued critical theoretical perspective, created a kind of elitism. Pop art : reaction to modernism deliberate rejection of the elitist 1950"s modernism embraces simplicity: we don"t need an art critic to tell us what this is ex. 1956 element of irony introduced by pop art. Rejection of abstraction or the confusion of modernism return to representation but with irony (magazine cut outs are what they are- not rothko colors . Post modernism still does experiment with form , does still have its own originality. Andy warhol : directly re-present marilyn monroe photo but still acknowledging tradition of experimentalism : how does he place the images? repeated imagery .
