Introduction: sound and the other arts, music, dance, theater, literature (especially poetry, sound"s neglect in film. Film is seen as a primarily visual medium, so the visual overshadows the aural. Silent films people though the medium at reached an art form and there was nothing added by sound. Like acting, sound is hard to analyze; take it for granted; it doesn"t stick in our minds the way visuals do: the importance of sound in film. Silent films weren"t silent: they had music piano, ensemble, orchestra, sometimes had sound effects people in the wings, an allefax: sound effects machine could make up to 750 sounds. Sound design a new concept/position created for apocalypse now in 1979: copolla asked walter murch to design the soundtrack. Components of the soundtrack: verbal elements, dialogue, off-screen narration voiceover spoken to audience and not heard by the character. Addressed to audience: first person narration (visual third person, authoritative voice of god remains offscreen, third person narration.
