Film is gaining legitimacy as an art form by the 1950"s young lmmakers who have grown up with lm (are in their 20"s now : truffaut and. Kirosawa) and see it as a legitimate art form rather than a new technology. Political factors: world has seen the war: depictions of horrors in journals, etc. : seen these powerful images: niche audiences wanted a lm art that would parallel that gravity (as serious about the human condition) -see a realism in lm that paralleled the images they saw in news. Rise of philosophical and social movements questioning traditions existentialism as a cultural phenomenon growing: a modern perspective that attacked traditional perspectives: some audiences wanted a lm style that also attacked traditions or explored themes of existentialism.
