GEOL 150Lg Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Axial Tilt, Paleocene, Paleogene
Document Summary
The sun, orbital systems (eccentricity, obliquity, precession), changing position of continents, carbon dioxide, changes in sea level and ice sheets (albedo and rates of erosion), Late proterozoic (late time of pre life): Sun weaker than today, evidence from around the world (glacial striations and deposits), Earth received lower isr which affected temperature. Permian was the warmest due to the high volcanic activity and co2 c. Temp rose to a max around 50million years ago. A global warming of 6 degrees celsius in less than 10,000 years. Know the carbon 13 numbers and what they do. Higer carbon 13 indicates higher biological productivity. Lower delta c 13 means lower biological productivity. Ocean temps warmed by -4 degrees celcius. 6-8 degrees warming in the mid latitude. 9 degrees warming at high latitudes-arctic temps over 23*c. Co2 together with water makes the water acidic and dissolves the shells in the ocean. This acidity caused the extinction of certain species.
