Chapter 1- behavioral research and the scientific method. Deaths in 2000 are more chronic diseases (health behaviors play into these diseases) 1900= acute infections diseases that are able to manage. *contradictory: long term hormone replacement therapy increases breast cancer risk. *contradictory: reduced risk of heart disease and heart attacks as a result of hormone replacement therapy. *behavior is good in one case and bad for another. Some cases when smoking is good and protective. Other cases where smoking kills (protective in parkinson"s disease risk of getting lung cancer is higher and more detrimental) Thinking that does not blindly accept arguments and conclusions (scientific literature) Need to understand literature and understand how we want to behave. Research implies using a form of scientific method. Process that is the same across all scientific areas in principal, its application varies from one discipline to another. Make observations: do as humans and curious people.
