HP 441 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Traditional Asian Medicine, Slippery Slope, Psychoneuroimmunology
Document Summary
All humans are susceptible to stress, trauma, etc. Certain things are said: we need to watch this level, which leads to unnecessary stress. Slippery slope: this is wrong so this is wrong and therefore i am going to die. Social comparisons are very destructive and in turn cause more depression. Medical research specialization leads to lack of interdisciplinary research. Health is often seen as absence of disease, we recognize the functional limitations (this is not the true definition of health) The pleasant life is fleeting, it wears off, not long lasting. Habituation: things aren"t as good towards the end. Ex: first bite of ice cream is heavenly but last bite is not nearly as good, loses flavor and excitement. Hedonic treadmill: humans quickly return to baseline state regardless of the ups and downs in life. Progress principle: you have a goal or expectation and once that is met, you will be happy.
