The cold war = permanent threat of major nuclear war produces psychological stress, but no fighting between major powers (deterrence and the long peace ) Positive peace = absence of structural violence of the threat of major war (=conditions of justice, mutual recognition of the humanity of the other) Peace-building = efforts to move from war through negative peace to positive peace. Nationalism: america will not just not give an inch to the soviets, america will prevail over the soviets. Liberalism: america will ultimately win by redoubling its commitment to its core ideals of democracy, freedom of religion and free markets, exposing the falsity of the communist ideals of the soviets. Reagan"s strategic defense initiative: defensive militarily, offensive strategically, and defensive politically. Gorbachev"s new thinking in foreign policy, reagan"s idealism and the almost- concluded reykjavik agreement for total nuclear disarmament.
