Internationalization: does not include non-state actors; globalization is not all linear. Liberalization: not all prefer capitalist systems; resistance to companies. Universalization: not all cultures want to participate or assimilate. Globalization is a shift in the nature of social space. Need to focus on the elements of qualitative change: Transplanetary relations= shifts in frequency, scope, and depth. Incipient globalization: 19th-mid 20th c: contemporary accelerated globalization: 1950s-today. Today"s globalization is not a re-run of earlier eras. Neoliberalist: continue to liberalize the world; international trade. Rejectionist: isolated groups (indigenous groups, religious groups, trade unions)
