We do not have a convention to deal with deforestation. It"s a massive gap in governance, a protocol is a long way off. There"s a forum on forests, but they just talk. Deforestation map shows the ongoing rate of deforestation across the globe. South america, sub saharan africa, australia, and the pacific islands are fucked. China is doing the best of anyone. The top five forested countries by land are the us, canada, china russia and brazil who are all doing alright. These five account for over half of forested land area. The collection of benefits that society enjoys from nature and natural resources. About assigning dollar values to things that nature does for us. Provisioning services, give us provisions we need to survive. Regulating services, sucking up the shittiness we put out. Cultural services, what personal or religious enjoyment and meaning we get. Filters and manages storm waters to prevent floods. Protective buffer against noise, pollution, wind, erosion.
