My Life Before and After Hitler
Who: Edwin Landau
What: It was a response to phase 1 of the Holocaust. He declared himself
Zionist and moved to Palestine and wanted to turn German shame into
national pride. Specifically, there were mentions of boycotts and how German
soldiers would stand outside and prevent people from entering. Basically
described the shifting perceptions of Jews during this time period as well as his
perceptions of West Prussia and Germans as a place that had betrayed him.
When: written in 1940 (the beginning of the Nazi regime: before they were
rounding people up and Jews were still functioning in society); reflecting on
1918-1940. Men were getting more involved in politics and he clearly saw the
difference in business

Significance: Loss sense of shared humanity (very fragmented), collapse of civic
culture long before extermination, German perspective changing, Jews
question their role in society
