Velar stops: refers to a particular place in the speech organ (producing different sounds) The phonetic symbols we use to describe the different consonants and vowels in english. All speech sounds are the product of the movement of a few articulatory organs: The six are: laryn, soft palate, tongue body, tongue tip, tongue root, the lips. Their movement are independent but coordinated gestures which result in distinct sounds. Larynx (voice box) is an organ in the neck involved in breathing, sound production, and protecting the lungs. It manipulated the pitch and volume of sound produced. A phoneme is the smallest contrastive unit in the sound system of a language. A sound is contrastive if the use of it as opposed to that of some other sound, results i a meaning different. /p/ /b/ /s/ /c/ /m/ are contrastive and hence distinct phonemes.
