PHIL 168g Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Epicureanism, Stoicism, Ataraxia
Document Summary
Existence of a god who has certain purposes/plans. Existence of an immortal, simple soul- is the seat of rationality and cognition. Every human being, human begins alone of all the animal species, every human being posses a soul or rational spirit that is capable of immortality. All animals but have a soul or spirit associated with body, not of the body, it instead is purely immaterial. They can fall apart into the constituent parts that are only held together when we have a living human being. The soul does not have parts, it is a simple unified thing. The body can and does die and corrupt, loses its bodily integrity, the soul can not corrupt because it has nothing that can come apart (very simple) Good in this world, not naughty, then you will go to heaven, be rewarded, etc. Character of afterlife is determined by moral character that you live this human life.
