PHIL 168g Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Egotism, Henry Sidgwick
Document Summary
Thinks the question is there value in the universe? a stupid question. The question is there value in the universe? presupposes that there is another universe to compare to. The second you reject platonism, it sounds like you"re saying that there can"t be value in the world (commits you to nihilism) Real world (needs to aspire to become ideal world) Nietzsche believes that this platonistic view is false and silly . Ethical egoism: if you think that something is good, it is therefore good. What makes something good is just the fact that you think it is good. Utilitarianism: judgement of right or wrong is holistic: how much harm has actually been caused or just the immediate harm only. ex: harm inflicted on peter + emotional harm to surrounding members of class. *if causes more harm than pleasure, then it"s bad (defined purely in terms of the real world- only things we can see around us)
