Collective supersedes individual (who must be told how to act and think: etzioni on communitarianism. Communities are: social webs carrying moral values . Webs based on shared set of social bonds. Communitarianism is about the conditions that facilitate bonds, community, etc. It"s a balance between individual rights and communal responsibilities: basic goals of communitarianism. Stop creating rights, start focusing in responsibility. Individual defined by the community(ies) he/she/ is a part of. Society"s problems are solved by substantive ethical identities and participation. Citizen is a volunteer, co-producer of a society"s goods, services: liberalism. Individual defined by his or her own identity. Society"s problems are solved by autonomous individuals, a market economy and the state. Civic action is advocacy, protest: communitarians. Stress connection and human need for communities. Individual"s autonomy is dependent on self-ability to maintain self within community. A solution to political alienation, economic fragmentation, and cultural wars.
