PSYC 339Lg Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Depth Perception, Crossmodal, Proprioception
Document Summary
Tuesday, september 1, 2015. We experience objects, events, and surfaces at a distance, from information at our sensory receptors. The debate between nativism and empiricism. Descartes: though natural geometry, correct identification on first view of the cube and sphere. Berkeley: no identification on first view; gradual learning to identify the sphere and cube by association with touch. Conclusion: cross- modal transfer depends on experience. Blinded by a chemical accident at age 3. Light sensitive (no form vision)between ages 3- 43. Sigh restored by corneal epithelial stem cell replacement. Mike may could not recognize a stationary cube from any angle but he could recognize it while in motion. Taking stock: studies of the blind recovering sigh. Vision becomes better over time. No cross- modal transfer before experience. Learning depends on a motion- based object tracking system. Suggesting that object tracking is innate. Blind patients never recover some abilities such as stereopsis. However, traditional methods required verbal instruction and report.
