Integrating to one community but should not assimilate to culture (more attachment to cultural identity today) Migrants sometimes create moral dilemmas for the communities in which they arrive. Several types of migration: social and economic adjustment, nomadic migration. Follow food, jobs, etc: trailer migration, marriage migration (mail order brides, more popular) Migration is the major residual and sometimes unknown component of population estimates and projections. Transition involves a process and a transformation: process: people move from one place to another and this represents the migration flow (number of immigrants) Negative- more going out: transformation: migrant stock changes as people move into and out of a given place (# born in the specified place) Trends: immigrants tend to go to heavier populated areas (la, sf, dc, ny, south. Push-pull theory: people are pushed out of their former location, or pulled to someplace else. Involuntary- wars, prison, urban renewal, natural disaster, religious/cultural persecution.
