WRIT 150 Lecture Notes - Watts Towers, A Reminder
Document Summary
Finding the beauty and usefulness of things that others typically find useless and garbage. Shows that the community is a supportive place that works together. Reflective of the diversity within the community of watts. Constructed during the artist"s lowest point in his life. Green glass includes recognizable soft drink bottles from the 1930s through 1950s. Gives hope to those that are viewed as outsiders because they too can learn the skills to construct something beautiful. Shows how even during the worst of times it is possible to have some beauty come from it. Reminds the community of the past struggles that they have overcome. During these times watts was considered the ghetto of the migrants. The watts towers and the surrounding architecture is relatively preserved from the early 1900"s. The lack of modernization also means that the culture from the past is also preserved, to some extent.
