Both classical and contemporary ballets are performed all over the world. There are national, international and small regional and local ballet companies all around the world. Examples of professional national companies: american ballet theatre, Examples of professional international companies: the bolshoi, kirov. Ballet, the national ballet of canada, paris opera ballet, royal. Examples of professional regional companies: columbia city ballet, Columbia classical ballet, carolina ballet theatre, the charleston ballet. Ballett- an artistic dance form performed to music using precise and highly formalized sets of steps and gestures. Renaissance italy and established its present form during the 19th century, is characterized by light, graceful, fluid movements and the use of pointe shoes and partnering. Catherine de-medici (1519-1589)- she paved the way for the art form from the 16th century to the present. She is italian, but moved to france to marry into the ruling family of henri, duc d"orleans, who would later become the king of france.
