EXSC 224 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Autonomic Nervous System, Cranial Nerves, Action Potential
Document Summary
The nervous system does three things: motor output. Function: communication lines between the cns and the rest of the body. Function: conducts impulses from receptors to the cns: motor (efferent) division. Function: conducts impulses from the cns to effectors (muscles and glands) Function: conducts impulses from the cns to skeletal muscles. Function: conducts impulses from cns to cardiac muscles, smooth muscles, and glands. Sympathetic division: function: mobilizes body systems during activity. Parasympathetic division: function: conserves energy; promotes housekeeping functions during rest. Stomach --> visceral sensory fiber: motor fiber of somatic nervous system --> skeletal muscle. Astrocytes (cns: most abundant, versatile, and highly branched glial cells. Small, ovoid cells with thorny processes: migrate toward injured neurons. Line the central cavities of the brain and spinal column. Separate the cns interstitial fluid from cerebrospinal fluid. Processes wrap around multiple axons in cns forming insulating myelin sheaths. Pns form of astrocytes: multiple sclerosis (demyelination in the cns)
