BSC 251 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Epineurium, Perineurium, Muscle Spindle
Document Summary
Describe the function of each of these parts: define reflex. Spinal cord extends from the foramen magnum to the second lumbar vertebra. Regions of the spinal cord: cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral. Spinal meninges: specialized membranes that separate the spinal cord from the bony spinal column; provide stability and shock absorption: also located on the brain: cranial meninges. Cross section of the spinal cord: grooves along the dorsal and ventral surfaces: dorsal (posterior median sulcus) and ventral (anterior median fissure ) Exit and become part of the spinal nerve. Controls specific skeletal muscle lateral gray horn: visceral (autonomic) motor nuclei. Involuntary activity of cardiac and smooth muscle and glands: white matter: lighter tissue. Axons and some glial cells organized into columns: posterior, anterior and lateral each column has tracts (axons) that are either ascending (carry info to brain: sensory) or descending (motor commands; from the brain)
