Landscape architecture lecture #4: history and ideas of the renaissance. Began in the mid 15th century (around 1450 ad) Villas built by wealthy - gardens designed as intellectual retreats. Best examples are the gardens at county villas built in the 1500"s in the hills above. Rome & florence: important characteristics of italian renaissance villas, careful adaptation to the site fully. The grading was handled master- smoothly: france, careful organization along sight-lines and axis. Also the strong linkage of the house with the garden. House and grounds designed as a single entity - the flow into each other: effective & extensive use of water. Water used for maximum impact - with the use of fountains. Italy is very warm - important for climate moderation. 17th century dance reached its peak for wealth and power. Contrast of site conditions - northern france is flat, wooded, high water table(marsh- lands), and cooler climate. Expression of nature tamed, bowing to authority (louis xiv)
