Alternative Medicine
WHAT IS ALTERNATIVE?
• Treatment based on non-western (science) views about causes and treatment of ilness.
o Not yet studied approaches
o Understudied approaches
o Studied and rejected approaches
COMMON JUSTIFICATIONS FOR USING ALTERNATIVE APPROACHES
• Extensive, long history of use of methods
o Assumption that occasional discoveries over long period of effort to find a cure
will eventually hit upon effective treatment
o Assumption that with long history of effort, trial and error and subjective
observations of outcomes of many cases justifies use.
• Clinical impressions and conclusions
o Observations and feedback from patients avowing that they got better
• Many approaches can add to or compliment standard western medicine.
o We aren't rejecting traditional medicine
o Not trying to compete with traditional medicine
o If your patient isn't getting better on your best traditional approaches what harm
can it do to try alternative approach that might work.
TRADITIONAL ORIENTAL MEDICINE (TOM)
• Traditional medicine in such places such as; China, Japan, Cambodia, Korea, and
Vietnam
o Basic Principles:
▪ Five elements of wood, fire, earth, metal and water.
▪ Tao = the way, significance of change and process
▪ Yin and Yang = 2 opposing forces that drive change
▪ Chi= invisible universal energy force that is believed to flow through all
living organisms.
▪ Acupuncture = opens the meridians and or directing the flow of chi to
promote health.
• Combines diet, acupuncture, meditation, physical exercise, healing exercise, herbal
medicine, and massage to promote health.
TRADITIONAL CHINESE SYSTEM OF MEDICINE
• Manipulating or altering vital force that flows through our bodies, CHI.
• Illness relates to blocked or stagnated Chi.
