Long before puritans, most populous states were populated by them. To expand empire, reinvent themselves, and convert religiously (missions everywhere long before first thanksgiving). Began cowboy culture (livestock management, and the livestock). Brought wild hawks to hunt, some got away etc, horses same, longhorns. First european settled city was st. augustine in florida (spanish!) Ponce de leon and fountain of youth (supposed site in st. augustine) Hernando de soto (basically ended incan society in peru, first european to discover mississippi river) Francisco vasquez de coronado (grand canyon discoverer, west texas, etc in search of 7 cities of gold)
