ADV 316 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Graham Wallas, Autotelic, Motivation
Document Summary
American creativity: o"keefe says it is to see something others don"t, like a flower. Lose consciousness, let it come out, flow through you, forget the rest and yourself. There are threads of standardized creativity, say hollywood vs indie company. Graham wallas 4-step model: preparation, incubation, illumination, verification. Collect materials and observe trends/people, feed your brain. Incubation trips people up, could take awhile can"t force it, people get impatient waiting for the sudden burst of illumination. Have to let it sit again, make sure it"s actually a good idea; check with others. Multiple intelligences theory: everyone has at least some that can combine with other people. Even tried to standardize by making a test for how creative you are. Mix autotelic (self-rewarding) with exotelic (looking for reward). Ie intrinsic motivation is to do it for its own sake (no deadline, might never finish) while extrinsic is for a job (maybe takes the fun out)
