ANT 322M Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Peninsulars, Chichimeca
Document Summary
The government discriminated against both groups when it came to land. They were stigmatized socially and were the lowest social strata because they were not mixed: many were actually mestizo but they chose to live as indians. Economically within the indians there were three groups, based on what kind of land they owned: These people were doing very well because they retained their land during the epidemics. A system created by the church that was a land base for indians. The church was in charge of them and the land could never be sold, only passed down to the children. It expanded because church lobbied in support of the indigenous people, because they were landless. Indians were not independent but they were economically better off: haciendas, what happened to indians when the transatlantic. Slave trade was ended and indians were turned into basically slaves. The casta system was a free system because no one was enslaved.
