How moon phases show the time of the night. The full moon is opposite of the sun, so when the full moon rises in the east the sun will be setting in the west. The moon does rotate, but we are always seeing the same side. We are on the earth looking at the moon. Synchronous rotation means it takes the same amount of time to complete a revolution as it rotates. (look on slides for synchronous rotation) The moon orbits the earth as earth orbits the sun, so the moon has to catch up. Time between two consecutive new moons is called a synodic month which is about 29. 5 days.
