CSD 306K Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Ossicles, Auditory Processing Disorder, Cochlear Implant

24 views4 pages
Conductive Hearing Loss (Cont'd)
Possible Causes
Outer Ear
o External auditory meatus occluded
Middle Ear
o Otitis Media
o Treatment:
Antibiotics
Pressure-Equalization (PE) Tubes
Otosclerosis (fixation of ossicular chain, ossification)
Usually can do something medically to remediate the problem.
o Occasionally we can't and that is when the hearing aid is going to be put on the metaiod
bone so that we can stimulate the cochlea
Sensorineural Hearing Loss (Cont'd)
This is where we come with the hearing aids and such because these problems cannot be
remediated
Cochlear implants and hearing aids
Speech Audiometry
Speech Recognition Threshold (SRT)
Stimuli: spondees - equally stressed bisyllabic words
o Examples: hotdog, birthday, cupcake (each word is not said correctly, for example the
stressed syllable that you would orally stress would’t be)
o Looking for the level where they are hearing 50% of the words correctly
Word Recognition Score (WRS)
o NOT threshold - measures how well speech can be discriminated when it is heard
o Stimuli: 50-word lists that are phonetically balanced
o Carrier phrase- phonetically balanced lists of one syllable words:
"Say the word couch"
Tympanometry
Probe
o Speaker
o Pump
o Microphone
Can reveal:
o Tympanic Membrane perforation
o Interrupted ossicular chain
Based on how the TM performs with the sounds
o Fluid in Middle Ear
o Stiffness of ossicular
Acoustic Reflex:
o Measures reflexive contraction of the middle ear muscles in response to high intensity signal
(about 85 dB HL normal hearers)

Document Summary

Outer ear: external auditory meatus occluded. Usually can do something medically to remediate the problem: occasionally we can"t and that is when the hearing aid is going to be put on the metaiod bone so that we can stimulate the cochlea. This is where we come with the hearing aids and such because these problems cannot be remediated. Word recognition score (wrs: not threshold - measures how well speech can be discriminated when it is heard, stimuli: 50-word lists that are phonetically balanced, carrier phrase- phonetically balanced lists of one syllable words: Based on how the tm performs with the sounds: fluid in middle ear, stiffness of ossicular. Acoustic reflex: measures reflexive contraction of the middle ear muscles in response to high intensity signal (about 85 db hl normal hearers) The ear can tighten its muscles in the middle ear in order to save us from some degree of loud sounds.
